Top of the Pops (TOTP) was welcomed back to our screens for two holiday specials over the festive period, and we, the Prolight Concepts Group, couldn’t help but be involved in this collaboration.
The show, hosted by Fearne Cotton and Clara Amfo, welcomed a star-studded line-up including Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa and Rita Ora, and also had some super star lighting with the Pixel Storm 12 Quad battens from LEDJ.
The LEDJ Pixel Storm 12 Quad battens were utilised on stage for the special editions of the show, to illuminate the tinsel backdrop and compliment other lighting featured. Acts that performed on that stage included Anne Marie and Stormzy, this was actually the grime superstars TOTP Christmas debut. Along with guest vocalist MNEK, Stormzy performed ‘Blinded By Your Grace Part 2’ from his Mercury Prize-nominated album Gang, Signs and Prayer.
“The Pixel Storm Battens from LEDJ are remarkably bright and provide a wide even coverage, we didn’t have much space on the floor and they did the job perfectly.” said Roger Williams, Lighting Designer.
The Pixel Storm 12 Quad battens are individually pixel mappable and feature 12 x 15W quad-colour LEDs. With a 10° x 45° beam angle and smooth colour mixing from the built-in colour macros, they are superb for wall washing due to their ellipsoidal beam angle. The 4 button LED menu allows selection of the built-in programs, RGBW colour mixing or multiple DMX channel modes to suit many applications, including stage back drops like on TOTP.
These battens are popular with event and hire companies and lighting designers, and became an overnight success, popping up in many events and installations up and down the country.
As is tradition, the show ended with the Christmas number one of 2017, and Prolight definitely ended a super busy year being ‘Top of the Pops’!
